Natalie Tyler’s ‘Cocoon’
Day 27
The last butterfly emerges. It is quite amazing to witness….Its abdomen fills most of the chrysalis, and appears swollen in size. The wings at first are very small, and gradually expand as the butterfly fills them with liquid. Once the wings are fully expanded, the abdomen reduces in size as liquid is released from its abdomen.
Day 25
Today the caterpillar that travelled up to the top of the enclosure yesterday pupates. We photographed the chrysallis shortly after this had occurred, when the chrysallis had started to harden. It is quite yellow toned in this stage.
